| A water softener removes calcium and magnesium from the water and exchanges it for sodium or potassium, depending on the type of salt used. A water softener can also ion exchange iron and heavy metals. It doesn't raise or lower the TDS level of the water. Water softeners are traditionally plumbed into the entry of the home.
