| What is the difference between a water softener and a whole house carbon treatment system? |
| A water softener removes calcium and magnesium from the water and exchanges it for sodium or potassium, depending upon which type of salt used. Water softeners can also ion exchange iron and heavy metals. It doesn't raise or lower the TDS level of the water. A whole house carbon system has at least a cubic foot of carbon in a tank similar to a softener tank with the same type of control valve. The carbon reduces chlorine, taste, odor, color and any chemicals present from all the water in your sinks, showers and faucets. There are lower priced systems that use 20" housings, but without regular backwashing the life of the carbon is greatly diminished. It is common to use a water softener and a whole house carbon system in tandem. Both units are plumbed into the entry of the house. Home Page | FAQs | Glossary | Contact Us |
